Job Overview
CBCHC is a Bible-believing, non-denominational, elder-ruled, Chinese/multi-cultural church. We are seeking a Pastor who loves and fears God, has a passion to proclaim God’s word, is called to shepherd and equip God’s people, and desires to reach the lost through evangelism and world missions.
Currently our congregation comprises a majority of Chinese immigrant families, for whom Mandarin is their primary language, with a significant minority of Cantonese speaking and multi-cultural families who are primarily English-speaking. The youth and young adults at the church are also primarily English-speaking. One of the longterm goals of this effort is to strengthen the church’s ability to attract and retain young adults and enhance the multi-generational makeup of the church. In the long run, the church leadership is seeking to reach beyond the boundaries of an ethnic-focused church and to be a truly multi-cultural church while retaining a distinctive ministry to Chinese-speaking people.
Our area is well-suited to this vision. Howard County is one of the most diverse localities in the US, with a strong and diverse economy that attracts an educated immigrant population from all over the world. The population of our county is less than 50% white, and both Asian and African-American populations are both approximately 20%. Nearly 30% of county households speak a language other than English at home. Nine percent of children in the county are of mixed race, nearly twice the US average.
The demographics of Howard County reflect the future of America, and make it an ideal place for a thriving multi-ethnic ministry.
The Pastor will cast a vision for the English & Chinese-speaking ministry and to mobilize and lead the congregation to grow in their relationship with God, their love for one another, and their effectiveness to fulfill the Great Commission. The Pastor will focus mainly, but not exclusively, on Chinese-speaking families of the church.
Roles and Responsibilities:
The Pastor, under the direction of the elders, will:
• Provide biblical (expository) preaching, teaching, discipling, and counseling to the members of the congregation to apply God’s word in daily life, as assigned by the Pastor.
• Provide leadership training and oversight for Chinese-speaking members in order to build and develop their spiritual gifts and cultivate servanthood.
• Assist in the oversight of day-to-day administrative operation of the church office.
This includes activities such as overseeing the preparation of weekly bulletins, fliers, and PowerPoint presentations, and helping with writing correspondences as and when required.
Additional responsibilities may include:
• To plan and execute weekly ministries and worship services.
• To shepherd and disciple adults and families of the congregation to be effective kingdom citizens.
• To assist in carrying out the youth program, training up the youth to have a personal relationship with God and a solid foundation in God’s word.
• To assist in ministry to young adults and young families.
• To visit members in the hospital, care facilities, and homes.
• To promote evangelistic outreach through enabling church members.
• Participate and serve in various church services/programs as the needs arise, e.g., small groups, Sunday School classes, Easter and Christmas worships, baptism class, new member interviews, local evangelism, funerals and weddings, and community service projects.
• To promote unity and facilitate communication between the Chinese and the English congregations and develop close ministry relationships.
Personal Qualifications
• Must be a born-again believer and have a clear pastoral calling from God.
• Exhibits evidence of Christian character and servant-leadership in both work and home life as stated in 1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9, and 1 Peter 5:1-4.
• Lead an exemplary life before the staff and the congregation that encourages and inspires them to walk with God both at an individual and group level.
• Maintains a spiritually balanced life (prayer, Bible study, rest, worship, financial stewardship) as reflected in his ministry, character, family testimony, and reputation both inside and outside the Church.
• Demonstrates a strong work ethic and personal integrity.
• Subscribes to CBCHC’s Statement of Faith, Mission, and Vision.
• Fluent in Mandarin Chinese; capable of teaching and preaching in Chinese.
Education, Ministry, Personal Experience
• Degree from an accredited Bible college/Seminary, preferably an M.Div. degree or above.
• Prior experience in pastoral ministry is preferred.
• Multi-cultural and multi-generational ministry experience is a plus.
• Married status preferred, but not required.
